The leader of the Czech opposition populist movement “Freedom and Direct Democracy” and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura, called for the termination of the temporary protection program and financial support for Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic.

In his video address published on April 7, the politician stated that there are too many Ukrainians in the country, they allegedly abuse social benefits, travel home for holidays, and increase the crime rate.

Okamura also emphasized that due to the Czech Republic’s membership in the EU, the country cannot independently change the rules of temporary protection.

“This is yet another confirmation that membership in the European Union limits us, even in matters of our own migration policy,” he noted.

The politician added that the government is preparing to tighten the conditions for foreigners to stay, and in the first place, according to him, should be a Czech citizen. Okamura also expressed hope for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible, since this, according to him, would mean an automatic termination of protection for Ukrainian migrants.

However, official data shows a different picture. According to the Czech Ministry of Labor, in the third quarter of 2025, Ukrainian immigrants paid about 8.2 billion crowns in taxes and contributions to the budget, while the costs of their assistance amounted to only 3.9 billion crowns. The number of recipients of humanitarian support is gradually decreasing: if in 2022 more than 234 thousand people received it, then as of September 2025 – only 83 thousand.

Experts warn that without Ukrainian workers, construction and manufacturing in the Czech Republic may face problems, which contradicts the government’s political statements.

Recall that as of January 2026, 5.6 million Ukrainians are abroad due to the war , which is 400 thousand more than at the end of 2024. At the same time, in 2025, the rate of net departure across the western border decreased by 34% compared to 2024.

As reported, Norway is changing the rules for Ukrainian refugees – men aged 18-60 will no longer receive collective protection.
