A commuter train derailed in Barcelona on Tuesday, January 20, after a retaining wall collapsed on the track. The incident left at least one person dead and 37 others injured, five of whom are in serious condition.
This was reported by the Associated Press, citing the regional authorities of Catalonia.
The collision occurred near the town of Gelida, about 35 minutes’ drive from Barcelona. Rescue services continued to work at the scene of the accident, using 20 ambulances and sending the injured to three hospitals in the region. Spain has declared three days of mourning following the tragedy.
The accident came just two days after another train disaster that killed at least 42 people. While Spain’s high-speed rail network is generally considered reliable, suburban services remain vulnerable due to infrastructure problems.
According to ADIF, the Spanish rail operator, the retaining wall probably collapsed due to heavy rains this week, temporarily suspending rail services on the line.
Recall, earlier in southern Spain near the city of Adamas in the autonomous community of Andalusia, two high-speed passenger trains collided . The accident killed at least 39 people and injured dozens more, some of whom are in serious condition.
