White House talks between US President Donald Trump and European leaders have kicked off the formation of a new security architecture for Ukraine. The future guarantees will include four key elements – a military presence, air defense systems, weapons supplies and a mechanism for monitoring the cessation of hostilities.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal .
According to journalists, at a meeting between US President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington, it was agreed to create a special working group. It will be headed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The group will include national security advisers and NATO representatives, who will develop a specific mechanism for implementing the guarantees. The United States will thus take a leading role in coordinating this process.
According to the publication’s sources, future security guarantees for Ukraine will consist of four key areas:
- Military presence. This refers to the possibility of deploying international contingents on the territory of Ukraine or in the border regions of EU countries.
- Air defense systems. Ukraine will receive modern air defense systems that will allow it to effectively protect cities and critical infrastructure from Russian attacks.
- Supply of weapons. It is planned to create a long-term mechanism for the supply of modern types of weapons and ammunition.
- Monitoring the cessation of hostilities. Establishing an international mission to monitor compliance with ceasefire agreements.
The publication added that one scenario could be the indirect participation of the American military in supporting European peacekeepers. This would allow Washington to avoid the direct deployment of troops to the territory of Ukraine, but at the same time guarantee the effectiveness of the peacekeeping mission.
However, US President Donald Trump said that he, as president, would not authorize the sending of US troops to Ukraine. In response to a question about the prospects for security guarantees, Trump said that European countries would play the first role.
“They want to have troops on the ground,” he said, referring to France, Germany and Britain. “I don’t think that’s going to be a problem,” Trump added.
When asked if he could give a guarantee that there would be no American troops in Ukraine, Trump replied: “You have my guarantee, and I am the president.”
“I’m just trying to stop people from being killed,” Trump also said.
As is known, a group of over 30 states, including Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and France, is actively working on creating a concept of international security guarantees for Ukraine.
Earlier it became known that US President Donald Trump, together with the leaders of European countries, agreed to create a special working group that will prepare a draft of security guarantees for Ukraine. This intergovernmental format will be headed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
It is worth adding that France, Great Britain and a number of other European countries are planning to send a limited military contingent to Ukraine . This involves the creation of a so-called “deterrence force”, which will include several thousand foreign military personnel.
Let us recall that after the end of the war with Russia, Ukraine has the full right to form its own security system, including new international agreements with Western countries and beyond.
