September is preparing a surprise: weather forecasters told what the weather will be like

The beginning of autumn in Ukraine does not promise a sharp cooling. According to preliminary forecasts, the weather in September will be close to or warmer than the climatic norm, and the summer heat may linger for a significant part of the month.

This is evidenced by data from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center and seasonal models from the Copernicus Climate Change Service, NOAA, and ECMWF.

According to the forecast of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, the average temperature in September will be +11…+18 degrees. This corresponds to the long-term norm for the first month of autumn.

At the same time, seasonal models give reason to expect a warmer September. For Ukraine and Eastern Europe in general, temperatures are forecast to be approximately 1.5–2 degrees above the long-term average.

So, at the beginning of autumn, there may not be a sharp transition from summer heat to coolness. According to forecasts, warm periods may last for a significant part of September, and comfortable temperatures may persist even into early October.

However, this does not mean that the whole month will be dry and warm. The weather can change under the influence of atmospheric fronts. Rains, thunderstorms and short-term cold snaps are possible.

Regarding precipitation, the Ukrhydrometeorological Center predicts 37–76 mm in most regions of Ukraine and 74–106 mm in the Carpathians. This is about 80–120% of the climatic norm.

Seasonal patterns of precipitation are less clear. Some periods may be dry, while others may experience localized heavy showers and thunderstorms. A prolonged lack of rain in early autumn may exacerbate soil moisture deficits, especially where moisture is already lacking after the summer.

Forecasters emphasize that the seasonal forecast shows a general trend, not the weather for a specific day. Therefore, more accurate data on temperature and precipitation in individual regions will appear closer to the beginning of September.

Thus, September in Ukraine is unlikely to be a sharp start to a cold autumn. With favorable weather developments, the summer heat may linger for a longer period, forming a long period traditionally called Indian summer.
