Serbia may stop supplying weapons to Ukraine after change of government – media

In Serbia, the student movement that won the parliamentary elections on October 25 plans to stop arms exports to war zones, including Ukraine. This also includes supplies through Western intermediaries who transfer Serbian weapons to the Ukrainian army.

Reuters writes about this.

Representatives of the Student List movement, which won the elections and put an end to the long rule of Aleksandar Vucic, stated that the future government should completely stop selling weapons to countries where hostilities are ongoing.

The ban will apply not only to direct supplies, but also to the sale of weapons to Western companies that subsequently transfer them to Ukraine.

At the same time, the new political force does not plan to join the European Union’s sanctions against Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

Serbia remains dependent on Russian energy sources. In particular, Gazprom supplies the country with about 2.2 billion cubic meters of gas annually at prices below market prices. The student movement explains that such cooperation is related to the country’s economic needs, and not to political support from Moscow.

Now the election winners will have to address issues of relations with Russia, US sanctions against the Serbian oil company NIS, and further rapprochement with the EU.

During his reign, Aleksandar Vučić maintained personal contacts with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

As a reminder, former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić admitted the defeat of his political force in the early parliamentary elections and declared the victory of the “List of Student Blockers.” According to preliminary estimates, the opposition list could receive from 135 to 140 mandates, while Vučić’s political force would receive about 105.
