Serbian President Vucic resigns to run for prime minister

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned to run in early parliamentary elections and become prime minister. The elections in Serbia are scheduled for October 25, and until then, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabić, will act as acting president.

Vucic has led Serbia as president since 2017 and was re-elected in 2022. His second presidential term was due to end in 2027, and the Serbian Constitution does not allow one person to serve more than 2 terms as president.

In early September, Vučić dissolved the National Assembly and called early parliamentary elections for October 25. The ruling Serbian Progressive Party nominated him as the leader of the United Serbia electoral list and as a candidate for prime minister if the list wins.

Vučić first announced his intention to leave the presidency amid protests that began after the collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024. 16 people died then, and protesters demanded the president’s resignation and accused the authorities, in particular, of corruption and violence against political opponents.

It was previously reported that large-scale protests and clashes between demonstrators and police took place in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The participants of the action demanded the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic and the holding of early parliamentary elections.
