Shakhtar Donetsk will play its first match in the new stage of the Champions League on September 10. The Ukrainian team will face Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
Both teams are approaching this head-to-head match on a positive note. Ahead of their European campaign, they played away matches in their domestic leagues and won.
In a tough match, Shakhtar defeated Karpaty with a score of 2:1.
PSV, in turn, met Ajax in a crucial Dutch clash and won with a score of 3:1.
The hosts opened the scoring midway through the first half, with Pepi putting PSV ahead. However, Arokodare soon equalized. The visitors took the lead again before the break, thanks to a goal from Gertrade.
Ajax tried to salvage the match, but the tension lingered until the final minutes. Bajraktarević sealed the final score with PSV’s third goal.
It’s worth noting that Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov made his debut for Ajax. The Ukrainian international came on in the 61st minute, replacing Berghuis.
Thus, Shakhtar and PSV approach the opening match of the Champions League after victories in their domestic championships.
