“She is needed”: the Kremlin talked about a possible meeting between Putin and Trump

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump “will definitely take place in due course,” but that “this moment has not yet come.” The meeting is expected to capture “major agreements” that the parties have not yet reached. Russia, he assured, is “ready to move quickly.”

Peskov recalled that the last time Putin and Trump spoke was in a “pragmatic business tone,” and such a meeting in the future is “necessary,” but significant preparatory work must be done before it.

“The meeting should take place when certain major agreements are reached. This cannot be just a symbolic conversation – there must be a fixation of the results,” Peskov said.

The Russian side views the upcoming meeting as a tool for a “peaceful settlement” — while the Kremlin is trying to position itself as a party that supposedly seeks to end the war, despite the continued aggression against Ukraine.

Peskov also mentioned that in 2021, Putin had a meeting with then-US President Joe Biden — it was held without much prior preparation. However, in the case of Trump, the Kremlin expects deeper coordination.

“This will not be a meeting for the sake of a meeting. It is needed as a tool for fixing certain decisions,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Separately, Peskov stressed that the Russian side is ready for quick action. This is probably a hint at Moscow’s desire to obtain favorable conditions for ending the war as soon as possible – or to impose its own vision of a “settlement” on the US.

It was previously reported that Moscow allegedly knew nothing about the preparations for a meeting between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Thus, Peskov commented on The Times’ information that Putin, Xi, and Trump may meet in September at a military parade in China to mark the end of World War II.
