Shelling of the port of Chornomorsk: sunflower oil leaked into the sea

After the shelling of Chornomorsk, a spill of sunflower oil was recorded in the seaport area, and the services are assessing the extent of the damage.

This was reported by the State Ecological Inspectorate of the South-Western District.

The attack on April 26 damaged the infrastructure of the Chornomorsk commercial seaport. A tank with 6,000 tons of sunflower oil collapsed during the fire.

Specialists from the Black Sea branch of the State Enterprise “USPA” quickly localized the consequences of the accident. They installed barriers on site to contain the spread and blocked the storm sewer to prevent residues from entering the water.

Inspectors examined the area and did not detect any soil contamination, as the area is concrete covered. At the same time, some of the oil got into the port’s water area – a spot measuring approximately 400 by 200 meters formed on the water surface. Boom barriers were deployed to contain it.

Experts have already taken samples of seawater. After laboratory tests, they will determine the level of pollution and calculate the damage caused.

A final assessment of the damage to the marine environment will be provided after all necessary data is received.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian forces carried out a massive attack with strike drones on residential areas and civilian infrastructure in Odessa. The shelling injured at least 13 people and damaged houses, a hotel, and transport.

As a reminder, the third large-scale oil spill since the beginning of the year has been recorded in the Black Sea, which has already caused a mass death of birds.
