Shooting in Kyiv: new details about the attacker and his motives have become known

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported new circumstances surrounding the attack in Kyiv, during which a gunman killed people and took hostages. According to him, the number of dead and injured is known, and the investigation is ongoing with all details being verified.

The Head of State noted that investigators from the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine are establishing all the circumstances of the incident, and the attacker was eliminated during a special operation.
“Investigators of the National Police and the SBU are currently investigating all the circumstances of the attack in Kyiv on ordinary people. The attacker was eliminated,” Zelenskyy said.
He specified that the attacker held hostages and killed one of them, and also opened fire on people on the street.
“He held hostages and, unfortunately, killed one of the hostages. He killed four people right on the street. Another woman died in the hospital: a serious injury,” Zelensky said.
The President reported that 4 hostages were rescued, and 14 people were injured, including a 12-year-old boy.
“Four hostages were rescued. As of now, it is known that 14 people were injured. The number, unfortunately, may increase,” Zelenskyy said.
According to him, the attacker set fire to the apartment before going outside, and had also previously been held criminally liable.
“It is known that the attacker set fire to the apartment before going outside with a weapon. He has already been held criminally liable before,” Zelensky said.
The Head of State added that law enforcement officers are checking all of the attacker’s communications and electronic devices, and will only provide the public with verified information.
“We need to check every detail. Investigators have several versions in their work,” Zelensky said.
Journalist Vitaliy Glagola reported that he had established details about the shooter’s identity, including his possible name, place of birth and residence, as well as the presence of email addresses and connections to Russian resources.
He also published data on the person’s possible service in the military structures of the Russian Federation and the presence of dual citizenship, noting that some of this information is being verified by law enforcement officers.
The journalist later reported the clarification and apologized for possible inaccuracies in the previous data.
“I would like to apologize to readers for the possibly inaccurate information in the previous news – I am currently additionally checking some of the data,” Glagola said.
He noted that the use of several email addresses has now been confirmed, as well as data on residence in Kyiv and Russia and a matching date of birth.
At the same time, the journalist clarified that certain data is still being verified, in particular information about service in the military structures of the Russian Federation, possible Russian citizenship, and identification of the person due to a difference in surname.
Later, Glagola reported that a reliable photo of the person had been established and some of the data regarding email addresses and place of residence had been confirmed, and also noted that this person is a former Ukrainian military man who served in the Donetsk region until 2004.
He reported that this person had a 2008 Volkswagen Transporter car with license plate AH5585HB, registered on May 5, 2015 in the Donetsk region in the city of Bakhmut.
The journalist also provided information about possible connections with Russian banking institutions, noting that the materials provided include the name Vasylchenkov Dmitry Vasilyevich with a date of birth of April 21, 1968 and a linked phone number.
According to him, a deposit of over 166 thousand rubles was recorded in Sberbank with accrued interest of over 9 thousand rubles as of 2021, and 3 bank cards with corresponding accounts and validity until 2019 appear in Alfa-Bank.
The journalist noted that this data matches the last name, first name, patronymic, date of birth, and contact number, but some of the information requires additional verification.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that an attacker who opened fire on civilians and took hostages in Kyiv had been eliminated . According to him, 6 people died as a result of the incident, and 9 more were hospitalized with injuries.
