India’s National Investigation Agency has detained six Ukrainian citizens and one American, accusing them of conspiracy to commit terrorist activities.
This was reported by the Indian Express.
The suspects were arrested last week at airports in Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow. According to law enforcement, they are allegedly involved in the illegal “import of huge consignments of drones from Europe to Myanmar via India.”
“They crossed the Myanmar border, where they reportedly met with ethnic groups hostile to India. The investigation also revealed that several batches of drones from Europe were delivered to Mizoram by them,” the source said.
Following the court hearings, the Ukrainians and the US citizen were taken into custody until at least March 27.
“The aspects of gathering evidence, uncovering the criminal conspiracy, identifying co-accused and analyzing the mobile data of the accused are such that keeping the accused in police custody is justified,” the judge stated.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already commented on the situation, assuring that there is currently no evidence to support the allegations of the Indian police, quoted by hromadske.
“Contrary to established international practice, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India has not received an official notification from the competent authorities of India about the detention of Ukrainian citizens. The Ukrainian side insists on immediately ensuring unhindered consular access to the detainees,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed.
The department added that publications by Indian and Russian media often contain distorted interpretations of the facts of the situation, manipulation, and unfounded accusations.
