Slovakia and Russia have resumed the exchange of military attaches for the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This is reported by the Slovak publication Aktuality.

According to the publication, the decision to restore military-diplomatic contacts was part of the agreements that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico reached with Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Moscow in May.

Slovakia has already sent two representatives to the Russian capital. Brigadier General Sławomir Staviarski will take up the position of military attaché, and Colonel Ivo Gahir will be his deputy.

Meanwhile, Bratislava is expecting the arrival of a Russian military attaché. According to Aktuality, he could be 46-year-old Russian Navy officer Maxim Verezhan, who previously worked at the Russian diplomatic mission in Rome.

The last time a Russian military attaché worked in Slovakia was about four years ago. After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Eduard Geger’s government expelled him from the country along with other Russian diplomats. At the same time, the Slovak military representative in Moscow also ceased work.

Aktuality reminds that the previous Russian attaché Sergei Solomasov was involved in the bribery case of the author of the pro-Russian publication Hlavné správy. The case involved the distribution of materials beneficial to the Kremlin.

Recall, Fico previously stated that Slovakia would not fight for its allies if NATO’s Article 5 were invoked . The Prime Minister emphasized that the country remains a member of the Alliance.

In addition, Slovakia has stopped military support for Ukraine and refused to participate in security guarantees from the EU .
