Slovakia blocks Ukraine’s defense funding from frozen Russian assets

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he would not support the European Commission’s proposal to provide Ukraine with a reparations loan from frozen Russian assets if this money is used for defense needs.
This is stated in the corresponding post on the social network X.
According to Fico, he sent an official letter to the head of the European Council, António Costa, warning that Slovakia would block any EU decisions on financing military assistance to Ukraine in 2026–2027.
The Slovak Prime Minister believes that the conflict in Ukraine “has no military solution” and that the EU’s strategy to help Kyiv is “wrong and ineffective.” He stressed that he would not vote for the allocation of funds for the war, explaining this by his “peace policy.”
Fico also noted the “peace initiatives” of US President Donald Trump and noted that the use of Russian assets for defense could allegedly hinder American plans for post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
Criticizing Kyiv, the prime minister mentioned “corruption scandals” and the suspension of gas transit, which, he said, caused economic losses to Slovakia.
At the same time, Fico emphasized that Slovakia remains a responsible partner in humanitarian issues: the country has accepted about 200,000 Ukrainian refugees and is working on new infrastructure projects.
The Prime Minister confirmed support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but noted that there is growing skepticism among member states about Kyiv’s rapid progress on this path.
As a reminder, European Council President Antonio Costa said that the European Union has almost agreed on a decision on financing Ukraine for 2026-2027 and may adopt it as early as December 18.
As reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced two solutions that will help cover Ukraine’s financial needs for the next two years.
