On Wednesday, June 18, Slovak police attempted to detain the former Minister of Defense as part of an investigation into the transfer of military aid to Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters, citing Slovak media.

It is known that the police tried to detain the former Minister of Defense of Slovakia Jaroslav Nagy. Nagy previously denied allegations of abuses related to aid to Ukraine. On June 18, he said that he was on vacation in Canada.

“Today’s performance, to be honest, did not surprise or bother me. I will repeat how proud I am that we helped Ukraine. I would do it again. And again,” Nagy wrote on Facebook.

Police also detained the former head of a state defense company.

Nady’s party members confirmed that he is abroad, and when he returns, “he will cooperate with law enforcement.”

Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok said that law enforcement officers are investigating the provision of military assistance to Ukraine by the former government.

“The Slovak government, led by Prime Minister Robert Fico, has stopped military aid to Ukraine since coming to power in 2023 and is seeking to improve relations with Russia, which supplies the country with oil and gas. Last year, Fico’s government accused the previous administration of treason and other crimes for providing aid to Ukraine,” Reuters noted.

Separately, the government also called on the police to investigate the actions of the previous government in transferring MiG-29 fighter jets and air defense systems to Ukraine.

Slovakia previously threatened to block new European Union sanctions against Russia if they threatened a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

As a reminder, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the European Union will stop funding Slovakia in the event of further deviation from the bloc’s common course.
