Donald Trump’s premature departure from the G7 summit in Canada, as it turned out, had more than just an official cover – the real reasons lay in diplomatic friction and personal “irritations”.
This is reported by the Financial Times .
According to a journalistic source in diplomatic circles, among the factors that prompted the US president to leave the meeting of world leaders early were irritation with Emmanuel Macron’s actions and reluctance to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky.
The French leader reportedly irritated Trump with his visit to Greenland, a region the US president has laid claim to, sparking a diplomatic row in Washington.
Another reason was Trump’s lack of interest in the planned meeting with the Ukrainian president. This meeting was supposed to take place on the second day of the summit, but the American leader decided to return to Washington, explaining this by the need to “personally control the crisis between Israel and Iran.”
To avoid a repeat of the situation, the organizers of the July NATO summit in The Hague took an unprecedented step — reducing the meeting’s program to one working session lasting 2.5 hours.
According to journalists, this format was agreed upon specifically so that Trump would not get “bored” and leave the event early.
It is worth adding that the summit agenda includes the issue of defense spending. The US is demanding that allies increase funding to 5% of GDP — this is precisely the goal promoted by President Trump.
The day before, it became known that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is considering canceling his visit to the NATO summit in The Hague , scheduled for June 24. This decision was a result of the head of state’s deep disappointment over the failure of a personal meeting with Donald Trump at the G7 summit in Canada, as well as the failure of key agreements, in particular on military assistance and sanctions against Russia.
Recall that US President Donald Trump stated at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, that he would not rush to impose new sanctions against Russia . The main reason is the high economic costs for the United States.
Previously, the Donald Trump administration terminated the activities of an interagency group that was developing a strategy to pressure Russia to promote a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
By the way, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to announce new sanctions against Russia as allies try to bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
