South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said that some recent cyberattacks on banks may have involved artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and called for new approaches to cybersecurity that take into account the risks posed by AI.

Reuters reports this.

According to Lee, a number of hacking attacks have shown signs of using artificial intelligence. The president noted that this has caused concern among the population, and stressed the need to adapt the country’s cyber defense system to new threats.

Meanwhile, South Korean police have launched a large-scale investigation into attacks on commercial banks that resulted in the leakage of customers’ personal data, Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday.

Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank, among others, have reported cyberattacks. According to Yonhap, information leaks were also recorded at Hana Bank and Woori Bank.

Authorities have not yet said what artificial intelligence tools the hackers may have used, and there is currently no complete information on the scale of the personal data leak.

Amid the attacks, Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-won held an emergency meeting on Sunday with financial industry representatives, regulators and executives of affected institutions, urging the sector to strengthen security measures and respond to cyber threats with the utmost vigilance.

In turn, the Financial Supervision Service and the Institute of Financial Security have provided financial institutions with information about 28 unique IP addresses associated with recent attempted hacker attacks, as well as data on the countries from which they may have originated.

It was previously reported that Germany plans to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure from Russian hybrid threats, including sabotage and cyberattacks. The country’s Interior Ministry is preparing the creation of new special forces and a national cyber defense system.
