South Korea held a “short sleep” championship: how the unusual event took place

The third annual Hangang Nap Competition 2026 was held in the capital of South Korea, Seoul. The event was organized by the city authorities to promote healthy sleep among the population.

The competition was held in a park near the Han River, where hundreds of Seoul residents gathered to participate.
According to the rules of the event, participants had to arrive tired and full, after which they were given eye masks.
During the competition, organizers measured the participants’ heart rates to check for stability, which is considered a sign of deep and restful sleep.
The winner of the competition was an 80-year-old man. Second place was taken by a 37-year-old office worker.
Journalists note that South Korea is one of the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with the highest levels of work overload and lack of sleep among the population.
