Space alarm: 5-magnitude magnetic storm will cover Earth

This week, the Earth will be covered by a two-day magnetic storm of medium intensity. According to experts, geomagnetic disturbances of the G1 level (5 points on the Kp scale) will last for two consecutive days – on Tuesday, August 19, and on Wednesday, August 20.

Level G1 is the lowest category of magnetic storms, but even it can affect radio communications, navigation systems (GPS), and cause power outages at high latitudes. The storm can also affect the well-being of weather-dependent people.

Experts note that the forecast of magnetic activity is updated every three hours, so the situation may change. At the same time, current calculations indicate a steadily increased solar activity for at least two days.

Possible consequences of the storm:

Short-term failures in GPS and satellite communications;

Interference in shortwave radio communications;

Weak voltage fluctuations in power systems;

Headache, fatigue, drowsiness in weather-sensitive people;

Possibility to see the Northern Lights in the northern regions.

Doctors advise on such days to reduce physical activity, avoid stress, drink more water, do not overeat, and also give up alcohol. Walking in the fresh air and getting enough sleep are useful.
