Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced his intention to ban social media use by children under 16 and require platforms to implement mandatory age verification.
Reuters writes about this.
According to Sanchez, the government is seriously concerned about the spread of hate speech, pornography, and disinformation on social media, which authorities believe have a negative impact on children and adolescents.
“Our children have found themselves in an environment where they should not have been left alone. We will no longer tolerate this,” the prime minister said, speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai.
He also called on other European countries to join similar initiatives, noting the need to “protect children from the digital Wild West.”
Furthermore, Sánchez announced that next week the Spanish government will introduce a bill that will hold social media executives accountable for illegal content and hate speech, as well as criminalize algorithmic manipulation and the dissemination of prohibited materials.
Separately, the prime minister announced that the prosecutor’s office will consider investigating possible violations by platforms like Grok, TikTok, and Instagram.
