“Sports will help restore dialogue”: Trump was offered a football match between the US and Russia
US President Donald Trump’s special representative Paolo Zampolli has proposed organizing a friendly football match between the US and Russian national teams. He said that FIFA and the respective national football federations could be involved in hosting the game.
This is reported by Russian media.
Zampolli made the proposal in an interview with Russian media. According to him, football can promote dialogue between countries, despite existing differences.
“Football is a game that unites the whole world, and I would be happy if a friendly match between our national teams were held with the participation of FIFA and the relevant national federations,” Zampolli said.
He also suggested that such a game could happen sooner than expected.
“Our great nations will meet again on the football field – not to pretend that one match can resolve all differences, but to show that sporting rivalry can restore dialogue,” Trump’s special representative added.
Zampolli stressed that sports can help build connections between countries. He said that both football and hockey can demonstrate that rivalry does not necessarily mean hostility.
“My task in the field of global partnerships is to help turn good ideas into concrete negotiations. Both hockey and football can remind us that rivalry does not necessarily mean hostility,” he emphasized.
