The United Kingdom will gather representatives from 35 countries to discuss options for unblocking the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East.

This was reported by The Guardian.

According to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during the meeting the states will assess “all viable diplomatic and political measures” that can be used to restore shipping.

“From the very beginning of this conflict, my guiding principle has always been British national interests. And freedom of navigation in the Middle East is in British national interests,” Starmer stressed.

The UK claims that this will be the first time that countries have come together to discuss this issue.

The meeting will be attended by countries that signed a joint statement last month, including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and Nigeria.

At the same time, the United States will not join other countries in discussing ways to unblock the strait.

Earlier it was reported that Iran had blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf , a key route for oil supplies from the Middle East. The movement of oil tankers in the strait has been effectively halted, and ships have reduced their speed to zero.

As is known, in his first statement, the new leader of Iran emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed . According to him, this is pressure on Israel and the United States.

As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an upcoming mission to gradually restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time , Europe wants to open the Strait of Hormuz , creating an analogue of the “grain corridor” in Ukraine.
