“Steel Porcupine”: Europe is creating a new security system for Ukraine

France, the United Kingdom and a number of other European countries are planning to send a limited military contingent to Ukraine. The idea is to create a so-called “deterrence force” that will include several thousand foreign military personnel.
This was reported by The Times, citing sources close to the negotiations.
What is known about the initiative:
This is not about combat participation. The contingent will perform the functions of training Ukrainian forces and providing logistical support.
The troops will be deployed outside the zone of active fighting, as well as outside areas that may be considered disputed. At the same time, they will be close enough to the front line to quickly reinforce Ukrainian defenses in the event of an escalation.
“This is a demonstration that the fate of Ukraine is closely linked to the fate of Europe,” said one of the French diplomats participating in the negotiations.
According to Western strategists, the main guarantee of Ukraine’s security after any future agreement with Russia should be not only international support, but also a powerful army within the country.
That is why the concept of the “steel porcupine” – a well-armed and trained Armed Forces of Ukraine – becomes a central element of the long-term strategy.
And while some countries, including Italy and Poland, do not plan to send personnel to Ukraine, a broad European coalition is ready to act quickly in the event of a new threat.
Recall that a group of over 30 states, including Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and France, is actively working on creating a concept of international security guarantees for Ukraine.
As reported, US President Donald Trump and European leaders have agreed to create a special working group to prepare a draft security guarantees for Ukraine. This intergovernmental format will be led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
