While US President Donald Trump announced a suspension of arms supplies to Ukraine, Russia is using this moment to escalate its offensive and bombard Ukrainian cities.

The Wall Street Journal writes about this.

According to the publication, during a conversation with Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin made it clear that he has no intention of ending the war and is not abandoning his goals, which were predetermined during the invasion. The US decision this week to suspend military aid to the Ukrainians, according to journalists, will help the Kremlin achieve these goals.

The WSJ notes that Putin’s strategy is to try to break Ukraine’s ability and will to resist by pressuring its military and civilians. Ukraine is now facing a summer of relentless attacks from Russia, while Trump’s efforts to achieve peace are stalled.

Recent events only strengthen the Kremlin’s belief that Russia can outlast Ukraine and its allies in a war of attrition. Ukraine will have to conserve resources, which will presumably accelerate Russian gains on the battlefield. Russia is stepping up airstrikes in Kyiv and other cities, increasing civilian casualties, destroying buildings, and depleting the population.

At the same time, the WSJ emphasizes that the seizure of new territories may not be the Kremlin’s main goal now. According to some analysts, Putin is seeking to grind down Ukrainian troops and equipment, and undermine support for Ukraine among its population and Western allies.

Let us recall that the United States of America temporarily stopped deliveries of some anti-aircraft missiles and high-precision munitions to Ukraine due to concerns about the level of its own defense reserves.

As reported, after the news about the suspension of deliveries of part of the military aid to Ukraine, the Pentagon assures that Washington continues to work on solutions.
