Finnish President Alexander Stubb has signed amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act that allow the import and transit of nuclear weapons through the country. The law will come into force on July 1 and repeals the current ban on such operations.

This was reported by the website of the Parliament of Finland.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has approved amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act that will lift the ban on the import and transit of nuclear weapons through the country. The law will come into force on July 1, according to the parliament.

The initiative to amend the legislation was submitted to parliament in April 2026.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkinen said that after the law comes into force, the country will continue to adhere to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and other international obligations.

It is worth recalling that the Nuclear Energy Act, adopted in 1987, prohibited the import, production, storage, and detonation of nuclear explosives on Finnish territory.

According to the Minister of Defense, amendments to the legislation were necessary to bring it into line with NATO standards.

It was previously reported that construction of a new large military base is underway in Petrozavodsk, Russia, near the border with Finland.
