Submarine sinks Iranian warship near Sri Lanka: over 100 sailors missing

An Iranian ship sank off the coast of Sri Lanka after a suspected submarine attack. At least 101 people are missing.

This was reported by Reuters, citing sources in the navy and the country’s defense ministry.

According to preliminary data, one person was killed and 78 others were injured. The ship sank after the attack. It is currently unknown who carried out the attack.

At the same time, a spokesman for the Sri Lankan Navy denied information about 101 missing people, saying that 32 victims had been rescued and were in hospital.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told parliament that the distress signal was received at around 6:00 a.m. local time, after which the navy immediately launched a rescue operation.

According to a Navy source, 79 people were rescued and taken to hospital. One of the injured was in serious condition and later died. Another 101 people are currently missing.

Local media reported that the distress call was received near the southern city of Halle. The rescue operation is ongoing.

As a reminder, the Skylight oil tanker, flying the flag of the Republic of Palau, was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman. As a result of the incident, 4 crew members were injured, and all 20 sailors were evacuated.
