Super full moon on October 7: how and when to watch the celestial show

On the evening of October 7, Ukrainians will be able to observe a real celestial show – the first of three autumn superfull moons. This phenomenon will not only be the brightest in 2025, but will also have a special name – “Harvest Moon”.

BBC Weather writes about this.

When and how to observe a super full moon?

The peak of the full phase will occur on October 7 at 06:46 Kyiv time, but the Moon will look its best on the evening of October 6 and 7, immediately after sunset.

In Kyiv, the moon will rise at 18:20

At these moments, it will be low above the horizon, take on a warm color, and appear especially large and bright.

What is a supermoon?

A superfull moon is a full moon that coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth, or perigee. At this time, the Moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.

The term “supermoon” was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle back in 1979, but since then the phenomenon has been actively studied by astronomers.

Why is he “Harvest”?

This full moon has an additional name – “Harvest Moon”, or “Harvest”. It is given to the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. In 2025, the equinox was on September 22, so it was the October full moon that received this name.

Interestingly, this year’s Harvest Moon date is the latest since 1987.

This Moon once helped farmers harvest after sunset, as it rose almost simultaneously with dusk for several consecutive evenings, providing additional light.

Why does the Moon seem so big?

If you see a giant moon above the horizon, it’s an optical illusion. Your brain compares the moon to buildings, trees, or mountains in the foreground, making it appear larger.

But orange or copper is quite real. When the Moon is low, light passes through dense layers of the atmosphere, and the short blue waves are scattered, leaving warm colors.

How to best see the supermoon?

Find an open area — a hill, a field, a riverbank

Go out of town to avoid light pollution

Binoculars or a camera with a tripod will help you see the details

For photos: shoot at dusk and add a landscape to the frame – this will enhance the scale

What’s next?

The October full moon is just the beginning. We have two more super full moons to look forward to in the fall:

November 5

December 4

So, if the weather permits, don’t miss this special night. The Harvest Moon promises to be one of the most beautiful astronomical events of the year.
