Suspect in police officer’s murder detained in Sloviansk: he faces life imprisonment

In Sloviansk, Donetsk region, law enforcement officers have detained a man suspected of killing a police officer in the line of duty. He faces up to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.
This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred on March 19 during a document check. The man opened fire on the police unit.
Police Captain Oleg Zakharenko, senior police officer of Police Department No. 4 of the Kramatorsk District Police Department, died on the spot from his injuries.
Following the attack, a special police operation was launched to track down and arrest the attacker. Later, investigators received information from local residents who spotted a man who matched the description of the wanted man.
He was detained during a survey of the area. The operation was carried out by operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department together with fighters of the KORD special unit and dog handlers.
According to preliminary information, the attacker is a 50-year-old previously convicted resident of Sloviansk who was in the SZCH. Evidence, including a firearm, was seized from him.
Law enforcement officers opened criminal proceedings under Articles 348, 262, and 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
“An investigative and operational group has been sent to the medical facility to clarify all the circumstances and take a statement. The issue of the legal qualification of the event is being resolved,” the police noted.

Later, the head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ivan Vyhivskyi, provided new details about the murder of 4 police officers by a former military man in the Cherkasy region. According to him, the suspect opened fire on law enforcement officers at close range, including those who were already wounded.
