She said that more than four and a half years of living in a full-scale war had significantly changed her views, forcing her to rethink her own values and plans for the future.

“At some point, I simply realized that I no longer wanted to continue living a life in which I wasn’t truly happy. And believe me, it wasn’t an easy decision,” the athlete wrote.

Svitolina emphasized that she continues to love and respect Monfils as a person. She said it was her desire to be honest with herself and with him that prompted her to make this difficult decision.

The tennis player also addressed the criticism leveled at Monfils following his decision to retire early amid family problems. She urged fans and media representatives to be kind and understanding, as both are going through a difficult time in their lives.
