Swedish company Saab has introduced a new Bolide 2 missile for its RBS 70 air defense systems. The developers claim that the upgraded missile is more effective at destroying small drones, including the DJI Mavic.
This is reported by Saab .
The company noted that work on the new missile lasted 4.5 years. Serial production of Bolide 2 is planned to begin by 2027. According to the developers, the main feature of the new missile is the ability to detect and hit small air targets, which were previously difficult for air defense systems.
Caliber Defense journalists report that engineers have upgraded the missile’s internal electronics and increased the amount of explosives in the warhead. According to them, the new warhead contains 50% more explosives.
At the same time, the total mass of the rocket remained unchanged due to the use of an aluminum body instead of a steel one.
“With Bolide 2, we are ready to provide our customers with an even more capable missile, ready to adapt to new aerial threats. RBS 70 users will be able to benefit from the improvements, including a more powerful warhead,” said Stefan Oberg, Head of the Missile Systems Business Unit.
Saab also reported that the key characteristics of the missile remained unchanged. The range of the missile is 9 kilometers, and the height of interception of targets is up to 5 kilometers.
According to the developers, the increase in the number of laser sensors allowed the missile to more effectively detect and engage even small drones.
By the way, Ukraine has doubled the supply of interceptor drones for the army since the beginning of 2026 compared to the entire year 2025.
Recall that during March 2026, the number of air targets destroyed by interceptor drones increased by more than half compared to February.
Recently, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine codified and approved for operation the JEDI Shahed Hunter unmanned aerial vehicle complex . The new interceptor drones are already being used to destroy enemy drones.
