Saab CEO Mikael Johansson said that an agreement to supply Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine could be signed in the coming months. The deal involves the possible supply of 100 to 150 aircraft as part of Ukraine-Sweden defense cooperation.
This is reported by SVT .
According to Saab CEO Mikael Johansson, negotiations on the deal are ongoing, and its conclusion is expected this year.
“Usually it takes a few months, I hope this year,” said Mikael Johansson.
At the same time, he did not name the exact value of the possible deal and did not specify the price of one fighter.
It is noted that in recent years the cost of one JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jet under export contracts was estimated at approximately $140-150 million. According to some estimates, the current price of a comprehensive supply, including training and equipment, could be $180-220 million per aircraft.
Journalists recall that in October 2025, Ukraine and Sweden signed a declaration of intent on cooperation in the defense sector. The document provided for the possible sale of Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighters to Ukraine. At that time, it was reported that the potential volume of the purchase could be from 100 to 150 aircraft.
Despite signing the declaration, the parties have not previously announced specific steps to implement a possible agreement.
Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announcedagreements to supply Ukraine with 150 Gripen aircraft and 100 Rafale aircraft . According to him, these aircraft will be new and should strengthen the state’s aviation capabilities.
It was previously reported that Ukraine is implementing a large-scale project to develop its own combat aircraft fleet , which in the future should number about 250 modern aircraft – F-16, Gripen and Rafale.
