The Swedish government is exploring the possibility of denying visas to Russian and Belarusian athletes planning to participate in international competitions in the country. Restrictions could apply even to those who have received permission to compete under a neutral flag.
This was stated by the Swedish Minister of Migration, Johan Forssell.
According to the minister, the government condemns the admission of representatives of Russia and Belarus to international tournaments, as this could contribute to the normalization of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation previously granted neutral status to several Russian athletes. However, due to potential visa restrictions, they may not be able to participate in the World Ski Championships, which will be held in Falun, Sweden, in February-March 2027.
The government’s position is supported by the Swedish Ski Association and the country’s sports confederation. However, the final decision on visa restrictions will rest with the authorities.
