Switzerland is outraged by the behavior of refugees from Ukraine

The mayor of the Swiss city of Wigoltingen, Franco Burkhardt, has criticized the behavior of some Ukrainian refugees, saying that some of them are disrespectful and do not seek to integrate into Swiss society.

She wrote about this in her column for the SVP publication.

According to her, there are currently about 70 thousand Ukrainians in Switzerland, and the federal government’s spending on helping them has already reached 1.25 billion francs.

“The behaviour of some S status holders is problematic: disrespect, unwillingness to cooperate or integrate and work are not uncommon.

Burkhardt also noted that the biggest problems usually arise not among those who have actually suffered from the war, but among those who “only have a Ukrainian passport or came from less affected regions.”

She also named the unwillingness of some Ukrainian refugees to live in dormitories with Afghans as another problem, although, according to her, the community has positive experience working with Afghan refugees: they learn German, work, and strive for integration.

In conclusion, Burckhardt stressed that Switzerland “provides protection and assistance to refugees, not tourists” and those who remain must integrate “with respect, commitment and the understanding that assistance is not one-sided.”
