Switzerland relaxes restrictions on arms exports: what has changed

The Swiss parliament has agreed to ease restrictions on arms exports, a move that should support the local defense industry without violating the country’s neutrality.

Reuters reports this.

The upper house voted 31-12 in favor of the changes, after the lower house backed the decision on Tuesday. The updated rules will allow Swiss companies to sell weapons to 25 Western countries and will ease requirements for re-export permits.

Industry and politicians say the tough regulations are hurting the arms sector and leading to the loss of foreign contracts. MP Bridget Haberly-Koller said the country needs a viable defence industry that can only function if it has access to exports.

The Federal Council will determine the date on which the new rules will come into force. At the same time, the changes may be put to a referendum. Current legislation prohibits the export of weapons to states involved in conflicts or violating human rights. Direct arms supplies to Ukraine remain prohibited.

It was previously reported that Ukraine will receive over $70 million in additional military support from the governments of Australia and New Zealand.

Recall, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the volumes of American weapons that Ukraine will receive in 2025 and that are planned to be purchased in 2026. According to him, the deliveries are on schedule and should provide the Ukrainian army with a significant package of weapons.
