Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi held a meeting at which he raised the issue of developing “small air defense” and strengthening its effectiveness.
Syrsky reported this on his Telegram channel.
According to him, currently the largest part of the neutralized UAVs is the result of the work of interceptor drones.
“During May, Ukrainian interceptor drones in three echelons of air defense destroyed more than 3.5 thousand enemy UAVs of various types. During this time, not only the number of downed drones has increased, but also the effectiveness of the “small air defense”. The second echelon, for which the Unmanned Systems Forces are responsible, demonstrates the highest efficiency: more than 1.2 thousand downed drones in May alone,” noted the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
He added that the number of UAV interceptor crews is currently being increased and personnel training is ongoing.
“Work is underway to form the fourth echelon of air defense, which will cover two more regions. We are also actively involving army aviation: in May, our helicopters destroyed more than 440 Russian drones of various types. We are equipping the helicopters with modern detection and targeting equipment, and expanding the line of weapons with new missile weapons, which are already demonstrating excellent results,” the commander-in-chief added.
Syrsky recalled that the enemy is constantly changing its tactics for using UAVs, increasing the number and quality of drones.
“The aggressor plans to increase the share of jet strike drones to 50%. This poses new challenges for us that require a timely response. At a working meeting on countering enemy strike UAVs, I heard proposals to increase the effectiveness of our air defense and further levels of modernization of domestic interceptors,” added Oleksandr Syrsky.
In particular, he noted that it is still necessary to resolve the issue of the number of combat units for interceptor drones, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to increase their own capabilities in the production of such elements.
Based on the results of the work, tasks were identified in these and other areas for the next period.
Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that Oleksandr Syrskyi took part in a meeting of the EU Military Committee at the level of commanders-in-chief and informed partners about the situation on the front, the losses of the Russian army, and the needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Russia also plans to significantly increase the production of FPV drones in 2026 , while simultaneously increasing units to combat Ukrainian drones. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to maintain an advantage in the use of FPV drones and increase the effectiveness of strikes against the enemy.
