Taiwan responded to Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement about supplying components for Russian missiles and offered Ukraine direct negotiations to prevent sanctions circumvention.
Reuters reports this.
Taiwan President Lai Tsing-de has announced his readiness to negotiate with Ukraine on strengthening control over the export of goods that may end up in Russia in circumvention of international sanctions.
The statement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he emphasized that Moscow receives critical components for missile production not only from China, but also through companies in Europe, the United States, and Taiwan.
According to Zelensky, despite public declarations of support for stability in the region, some Taiwanese electronics continue to end up in Russian military production. He emphasized that without these supplies, the Kremlin would not be able to maintain the pace of missile strikes.
In response, Lai Qingde wrote on the social network X that Taiwan has long been cooperating with international partners to support Ukraine, both through humanitarian aid and through sanctions mechanisms. He also recalled the Taiwanese volunteers who died fighting on the side of Ukraine.
The President of Taiwan stressed that any assistance to the aggressor or violation of export controls is unacceptable, and expressed hope for an early end to the war.
Later, commenting on the situation to journalists, Lai Qingde said that he expects specific information from the Ukrainian side regarding possible sanctions violations. According to him, Taiwan is ready to strengthen control over goods that may enter Russia through third countries and take additional measures to support Ukraine.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a speech in Davos, Switzerland, stated that Russia’s military-industrial complex is actively producing strike drones and missiles, however, it could not do this without critically important components supplied from other countries . This is not only about China, but also about other states.
