Technological breakthrough: what is known about the new tactics of Ukrainian drones

Russian footage taken during the strikes on Tuapse and Novorossiysk shows a naval drone with fiber-optic drones mounted in folding compartments along the hull. This is the first known case of such drones being launched from the sea.

The media notes that both Russia and Ukraine are currently testing ways to significantly extend the flight range of their drones. This applies not only to standard FPV models, but also to fiber-optic drones, which are valued for their high resistance to jamming.

Analysts believe that the real breakthrough will come through the combination of such drones with sea platforms or other launch vehicles. As Olena Kryzhanivska notes, their potential can be “unfolded” in interaction with carriers – sea, land or air.

According to Roy Gardiner, fiber-optic FPV drones launched from sea platforms can bypass electronic warfare systems and engage both land and sea targets. He believes this approach could change the balance of power in the Black Sea. They could be particularly effective against distant targets such as Tuapse or Novorossiysk.

The challenges of countering such drones remain significant. One known method is to shoot them with a shotgun or physically cut the fiber optic cable in flight with knives or scissors.

Forbes authors also emphasize that the previously discovered Magura drone near the coast of Turkey and the fiber-optic drone carrier off the coast of Krasnodar Krai indicate that Ukrainian naval UAVs operate almost throughout the Black Sea.

Senior Researcher at the Center for a New American Security Samuel Bendett emphasized: Ukrainian drone developers are at the forefront when it comes to various unmanned platforms for various tasks, and their experience today is difficult to overestimate even in comparison with the most developed countries in the world.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, September 24, naval drones attacked the port of Tuapse in the Krasnodar Territory . Sirens and explosions were heard in the city.
