The United States is trying to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to a peace deal that would include concessions from Russia, including on occupied territories. In return, Washington is offering Kyiv economic benefits and support for post-war reconstruction.
The New York Times writes about this on the eve of the talks in Oslo.
According to the publication, US President Donald Trump is increasing pressure on the Ukrainian side to reach an agreement. American representatives are persuading Kyiv to drop the demand to return the territories occupied by Russia in the east of the country and to consider the economic benefits of a possible agreement, even if its terms largely correspond to Moscow’s position.
At the same time, the NYT does not specify whether such a plan would provide for the legal recognition of the occupied territories as Russian. It is possible that this is a de facto abandonment of attempts to return them to Ukrainian control.
Trump aides believe the war is at a turning point and it is now up to Kyiv to take the next step. They are reportedly urging Zelensky to demonstrate a willingness to negotiate with Moscow, even if it means making territorial concessions.
Meanwhile, the United States, Ukraine, and European partners are working on proposals for a possible two-pronged end to the war, Axios reports, citing a U.S. official.
The first direction concerns the future of Ukraine. It provides for security guarantees, European integration, and an economic plan for post-war recovery that should help attract investment and secure financing for the country.
The second set of proposals is addressed to Russia. It covers the conditions for ending the war, a possible new security system between Russia and Europe, and the prospects for economic cooperation after the end of hostilities.
According to the American official, representatives of the United States, Ukraine and European countries have been working on the documents for the past week. The next stage is to determine whether these developments can become the basis for substantive negotiations with Russia.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the latest decisions of the Donald Trump administration look like an attempt to persuade Ukraine to surrender to Russia . According to him, the US is demanding an end to attacks on Russian fuel infrastructure, but is delaying the delivery of Patriot missiles.
As reported, US President Donald Trump has again criticized Volodymyr Zelensky for the strikes on Russian oil refineries . The American leader said that these attacks are harming the global diesel market and accused the Ukrainian president of being unwilling to end the war.
