The Armed Forces of Ukraine presented the “Marichka” AI system for planning combat operations: what is known about it

The Central Research Institute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine presented the “Marichka” intellectual and information system, which will help commanders plan combat operations. The system is expected to reduce decision-making time from 6-12 hours to a few minutes.

Yuriy Klyat, head of the Central Research Institute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that the “Marichka” system was created to support commanders of military units during the planning of combat operations. According to him, currently brigade and regiment commanders spend from 6 to 12 hours on making a decision, processing about 20 documents, while the new system should reduce this process to several minutes.

Klyat noted that “Marichka” works on a principle similar to ChatGPT . It centrally collects and analyzes information, calculates the ratio of combat potentials and models possible options for action. At the same time, the final decision, according to him, will always be made by the commander.

The developed system is designed to collect, process and verify data, automatically calculate the ratio of forces and means, assess the necessary resources and possible losses. In addition, it is able to simulate the combat situation on an interactive map and promptly inform about its changes.

The name “Marichka” was chosen in honor of a Ukrainian female name. The Central Research Institute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the tests, the system successfully completed the tasks set on test data.

The neural network is currently being tested and trained. The developers are also working on protecting information transmission channels and integrating documents marked “For official use” and “Secret”. The next stage will be working with information of the highest level of secrecy.

“Marichka” is expected to increase the efficiency of commanders and command posts at the brigade, army corps, and group levels. However, the technical characteristics of the system are not disclosed for security reasons.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brigadier General Andriy Lebedenko noted that elements of artificial intelligence are already used in drones and control systems for certain types of weapons. According to him, the new neural network should accelerate information processing, troop control, and decision-making on the battlefield.

Recall that Ukraine has introduced a new AI service, Lapathoniia Chat , which works on the basis of large-scale Ukrainian language models and infrastructure within the country. The platform was launched in a closed beta testing format.

Earlier, voting for the name of the first national large-scale language model, which is being developed together with Kyivstar, started in Ukraine . Subsequently, Ukrainians chose the name for the first national large-scale language model —the winner was “Siayvo” . More than 136 thousand people took part in the vote.
