Alfiorov Named New Head of Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance by Cabinet

On Friday, June 27, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed historian Oleksandr Alfiorov as the new head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

This was announced by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

Oleksandr Alfiorov has been a researcher at the Institute of History of Ukraine at the National Academy of Sciences since 2010. He is the author, co-author, and editor of 15 books and over 100 scholarly articles.

In addition, he headed the expert group on derussification in Kyiv.

Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Alfiorov joined the Armed Forces. He initially served as an officer in the Azov-Kyiv Special Operations Command, and since September 2022, has been an officer in the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, where he leads the humanitarian training and information support group within the psychological support department. He also holds the rank of reserve major.
