Universal plans to produce a sequel to the cult classic The Mummy with the original cast. The studio is already in talks with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Variety reports this.

Both actors are expected to reprise their iconic roles. Studio representatives are not commenting on this information at this time, but deals could be finalized soon.

The new film will reportedly not be a reboot. It will be a direct continuation of the previous events, with the plot completely ignoring the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), in which Weisz’s character was played by Maria Bello.

Background: “The Mummy” is a 1999 adventure film about treasure hunter Rick O’Connell, who accidentally awakens the ancient mummy priest Imhotep. Now, he and Evelyn must stop the awakened evil. Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo.

Sequels followed in 2001 and 2008 with The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Universal Studios famously attempted to resurrect The Mummy with Tom Cruise in 2017, but the film was a commercial failure.

As a reminder, it was previously announced that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has decided to resume her acting career after her wedding to Prince Harry. She appeared for the first time in several years on the set of Amazon’s new film, “Close Personal Friends.”
