The administration of Czech President Petr Pavel has rejected a proposal from the Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD) to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the country’s highest state award, the Order of the White Lion.

This was reported by Ukrinform, citing a comment by the spokesman for the Czech president.

The presidential administration noted that neither the Constitution nor the law gives the head of state the authority to decide on the issue of deprivation of state awards.

“A state award awarded or presented by the President of the Republic may be revoked only on the basis of a final court decision, which provides for punishment in the form of deprivation of honorary titles and awards. Such punishment may be imposed only under the conditions provided for by the Criminal Code,” the department emphasized.

According to Czech law, deprivation of state awards or honorary titles is possible only in the event of a conviction for an unconditional imprisonment of at least two years for an intentional crime committed for particularly shameful motives.

At the same time, the SPD insists on depriving Volodymyr Zelensky of the highest Czech state award – the Order of the White Lion.

The Ukrainian president received the award in 2022 from then-Czech President Miloš Zeman. At the time, the reason for the award was “his bravery and courage in refusing the American offer of asylum and in his decision to remain in then-war-torn Kyiv” after the start of a full-scale invasion.

It was previously reported that Polish President Karol Nawrocki also announced his intention to deprive Volodymyr Zelensky of Poland’s highest state award – the Order of the White Eagle – due to the decision to award the elite unit of the Ukrainian Special Forces the title of Heroes of the UPA.

Also, the fifth president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, announced that he was renouncing the Polish Order of the White Eagle . He called for an urgent halt to the escalation of the crisis in relations between the two neighboring states and the restoration of a strategic partnership.
