Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called on US President Donald Trump to stop making statements about a possible seizure of Greenland.
Her statement was quoted by TV 2 and the BBC .
Frederiksen emphasized that talk of annexing Greenland is baseless. According to her, the United States has no right to seize any of the three countries that make up the Kingdom of Denmark.
She also stressed that Denmark, and therefore Greenland, is a member of NATO and is subject to the Alliance’s collective security guarantees.
“I urge the United States to stop threatening a historically close ally, another state and people who have clearly stated that they are not for sale,” the Danish prime minister added.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed Greenland’s strategic importance to US security. He stated that the island plays a key role in countering Russia and China’s growing activity in the Arctic.
Incidentally, the US has stepped up its intelligence gathering efforts on Greenland , using the American spy apparatus, which indicates that Trump is serious about acquiring the island in Denmark.
Earlier, it was reported that US President Donald Trump’s long-standing goal of annexing Greenland has moved from rhetoric to official policy, as the White House began implementing a formal plan to acquire the Arctic island from Denmark .
As a reminder, last December, US President Donald Trump stated that the US should establish control over Greenland , which is currently Danish territory.
Trump also expressed confidence that the United States would be able to gain control of Greenland. He said the island’s approximately 57,000 residents aspire to become part of the United States .
Greenland’s government has reportedly called a general election amid US President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in the island.
Furthermore, the Trump administration is exploring the possibility of Greenland becoming part of the United States, even acknowledging the potential use of military force . “We will get Greenland. Yes, 100%,” the US president stated , commenting on the possibility of annexing the island.
