On the evening of Wednesday, July 29, Ukrainians will be able to observe the full Moon, traditionally called the Deer Moon. The best time to admire the astronomical phenomenon is after sunset, when the Earth’s satellite rises above the southeastern horizon.

This is reported by The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

According to the publication, the maximum phase of the full moon will occur on July 29. However, the Moon will have its most spectacular appearance in the evening at sunrise, when it will appear larger due to an optical illusion near the horizon.

The name “Deer Moon” comes from the natural life cycle of deer. It is in July that males begin to actively grow new antlers after shedding their old ones each year. They become larger and stronger each year, which is why the July full moon is named after this feature.

It is noted that traditional names for the full moon were influenced by the cultures of the indigenous peoples of North America, as well as European and colonial traditions. Originally, they denoted not only the day of the full moon, but the entire lunar cycle.

The July full moon has other historical names. Different peoples called it the Salmon, Berry or Storm Moon, the Month of Ripe Raspberry, Ripe Corn or Ripening Bird Cherry. Such names are associated with seasonal natural phenomena, the ripening of the harvest and the weather characteristic of mid-summer with frequent thunderstorms.

Under favorable weather conditions, residents of Ukraine will be able to observe the Deer Moon with the naked eye. It is best to choose a place with an open horizon and minimal artificial lighting.
