The Duty to Fight Russia: Stubb Explains Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Александр Стубб / Yle

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that the security guarantees currently being discussed for Ukraine by the “coalition of the willing” would mean that the participating European countries would be obliged to enter into war with Russia in the event of further aggression against Ukraine.

He stated this in an interview with The Guardian. “This is precisely the essence of security guarantees by definition,” the Finnish president emphasized.

Alexander Stubb explained that these guarantees will only come into force after an agreement between Ukraine and Russia is concluded. He also emphasized that Russia will have no veto power over the format of these guarantees.

“Security guarantees are, in essence, a deterrent. That deterrent must be credible, and to be credible, it must be strong,” Stubb added.

Earlier, “Pryamiy” reported that the “coalition of the willing” is ready to deploy support forces in Ukraine.

The United States may also join in providing security guarantees. Specifically, Washington is considering monitoring the buffer zone that may be formed after the cessation of hostilities.
