The electricity transmission tariff will increase by 25% starting August 1: who will be affected by the changes?

The National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulatory (NKREK) has approved a new tariff for electricity transmission. Starting August 1, it will increase by 25%, but for household consumers, the current price of electricity will not change yet.
This was announced by the National Energy and Public Utilities Commission of Ukraine following the results of an open meeting.
The new tariff for electricity transmission will be UAH 928.45 per MWh excluding VAT. For “green” electrometallurgy enterprises, the regulator has left a separate rate – UAH 563.26 per MWh.
The tariff structure included a component for financing special obligations to support the production of electricity from renewable sources. UAH 365.19 per megawatt-hour was allocated for these purposes.
At the same time, the National Commission for the Regulation of Energy and Utilities of Ukraine emphasized that the decision concerns only the tariff for electricity transmission through Ukrenergo’s main networks. It is paid by electricity suppliers and large consumers, so this decision does not provide for an automatic increase in the tariff for the population.
The commission explained the tariff revision by several factors. Among them are the growth of the exchange rate, which increased Ukrenergo’s expenses for settlements with producers of “green” electricity, a reduction in the volume of electricity transmission, and an increase in the cost of its purchase after the liberalization of price caps.
The regulator has effectively approved the decision, which it had already supported in early July. At that time, it failed to be put into effect due to a technical error in the legislation.
It was about the law on market coupling, in which, due to an error, the norm on special obligations in the Ukrenergo tariff was not postponed until 2030. Subsequently, the Verkhovna Rada corrected this conflict, and President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the corresponding law.
