Ukraine’s energy system is on the verge of serious collapse, and Kyiv and the eastern regions may be left without electricity.

Citing Western diplomats and sources in the energy sector, the publication’s journalists write that the massive Russian strikes have created a critical threat to the electricity transmission system from the western regions, where the main generation is currently concentrated.

According to WP interlocutors, if high-voltage lines are disabled, Ukraine could actually be divided into two parts, and the East would be left without electricity.

“We are, if not on the verge of a complete power outage in the east of the country, then very close to it,” a senior European diplomat told the publication.

Sources add that a similar situation is developing in the capital.

“We are now one step away from a complete power outage in Kyiv,” a source familiar with the state of the power system told WP.

Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk noted that Russian air attacks on energy infrastructure are becoming more frequent, and there is less and less time left to restore facilities.

At the same time, The Washington Post’s interlocutors emphasize that a scenario of complete energy collapse can still be avoided. They recall that during the blackouts in 2022, energy companies restored electricity supply within two days.

“If Ukraine receives the necessary materials for rapid repairs, and Russia does not carry out repeated strikes on the same objects, restoration could take place quite quickly,” one of the sources noted.

Mykhailo Honchar, President of the Center for Global Studies “Strategy XXI”, predicts that energy supply in Ukraine will remain unstable throughout the winter and even into the spring.

As previously reported, as a result of the Russian attack on the night of December 13, electricity, water, and heat supplies were cut off in Odessa . Inviolability points were deployed in the city and drinking water supplies were organized.

As a reminder, on the night of December 13, the Russian occupation army carried out a massive air attack on Ukraine using strike drones, and after midnight — also missiles. Critical, energy, and industrial infrastructure facilities in several regions were hit.
