Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, called the resignation of Mykhailo Fedorov as Ukraine’s Minister of Defence “a big surprise”.

He said this in an interview with European Pravda.

Kubilius noted that if Fedorov is not reappointed to a similar position during the government renewal, “this will raise the question of why such a person is being replaced.”

“He may take on some important responsibilities in a different position, but it’s too early to discuss that; we don’t yet know what the government will look like. It’s important for us to continue what we’ve started, especially the Ukraine Support Loan. 60 billion is a huge amount of money. We’ve made good progress with Mykhailo Fedorov on implementing this loan with the first so-called weapons list,” the European Commissioner said.

Kubilius said he received a message that Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko would resign on the way from Warsaw to Chelm.

“Indeed, sometimes changes in government are necessary. And we’ve heard from our interlocutors in Kyiv that the new prime minister is well-suited for the job. But I’m most interested in who will be responsible for defense in Ukraine and what will happen to the defense minister. We have worked very closely, and continue to work closely, with Mykhailo Fedorov—both before and especially after he took over the Defense Ministry. A great deal has been achieved during this period,” the European Commissioner said.

Earlier, the European Solidarity faction called on Prime Minister candidate Sergei Koretsky to reinstate Mykhailo Fedorov in the new government and entrust him with security and defense matters.
