The EU Court rejected Hungary’s case on frozen Russian assets: what is the reason?

The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected Hungary’s claim regarding the decision to use frozen Russian assets to finance military aid to Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters, citing the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU dated September 9.

The decision to use Russian assets to help Ukraine was made by the European Peace Fund committee, not the Council of the EU. Therefore, Hungary’s claim does not fall within the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the EU.

It is also noted that Hungary did not vote for the decision to provide aid to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets.

Because of this, the European Peace Fund committee decided not to involve the Hungarian side in making the relevant decision.

The committee concluded that a political decision had been made in response to Ukraine’s request for assistance, which it called strategic for the interests of the European Union.

At the same time, challenging the committee’s actions is not within the competence of the Court of Justice of the EU. Therefore, Hungary’s claim was left without consideration.

Hungary filed a lawsuit regarding the decision to use Russian assets back in 2024.

As a reminder, Hungary recently decided to expel ten employees of the Russian mission. Budapest stated that the diplomats were engaged in activities that contradict the Vienna Convention.

Moscow has already reacted to Hungary’s decision. A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the Russian side will give a tough response.

It was previously reported that Hungary decided to expel 10 Russian diplomats from the country due to activities that the Hungarian side considers “unacceptable” in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
