The EU faction, at a meeting with the Commissioner for Military Affairs Reshetylova, explained why the military ombudsman should be independent of the OP
The European Solidarity faction held a meeting with the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Military Personnel and Their Family Members, Olga Reshetylova.
This was announced by the co-chair of the faction, Iryna Gerashchenko, on social networks.
“Today, a bill on a military ombudsman is on the parliament’s agenda. The EU systematically protects the rights of the military, we realize the importance of strengthening this area, given the number of complaints about injustice, problems of families of prisoners and missing persons, trials against the military, violations of the rights of mobilized people, and other issues. At the same time, we defend the independence of the institution of the ombudsman, who should be appointed by the Verkhovna Rada, not by the president,” Gerashchenko notes.
“Unfortunately, the committee did not take into account our amendments, except for one – we requested an ombudsman report to the Verkhovna Rada (the draft only required it to Zelensky),” the faction co-chair said.
“We believe that the draft law in its current form, when the military ombudsman is appointed by the president, violates the Constitution, European practice, and contradicts the very essence of an independent institution. We frankly discussed our reservations with Ms. Olga. At the same time, we thanked Olga for her great work in protecting the rights of military personnel, we are ready for the closest cooperation to support our soldiers and their families. We agreed to transfer specific cases of violations of military personnel’s rights and continue communication and assistance,” writes Iryna Gerashchenko.
