After the European Union countries agreed on a plan that provides for a gradual cessation of Russian gas imports.
The spokesman for the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU announced this, Reuters reports.
According to the agreement, the European Union intends to completely abandon Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas by the end of September 2027.
The decision still requires formal approval at the EU ministerial and European Parliament levels. A vote in the European Parliament is scheduled for next week, and ministers will likely approve it early next year.
Despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia, the EU expects the plan to be adopted with a convincing majority.
As a reminder, during the full-scale invasion , the European Union spent 124 billion euros more on Russian goods and energy resources than on aid to Ukraine.
Incidentally, last week the price of Russian Urals crude oil fell to $36 per barrel, reaching its lowest level in 2.5 years. The drop occurred on the eve of new US sanctions against Russia’s two largest oil companies.
